Test drilling has begun on a potential shale gas site that energy companies hope will turn Poland into an energy Eldorado.
Machines got drilling at a site near Kutno in the early hours of August 24 under the auspice of the state-controlled oil, gas and mining company, PGNiG, and the US company FX Energy. The two have high expectations of tapping into one of the biggest energy reserves in Europe, estimated to be around 100 billion cubic metres in size.
“We want to examine about 140 square kilometres in the Rotliegend structures at a depth of about 6.5 thousand metres,” said Scott Duncan, FX Energy’s vice president.
