Janusz Palikot’s recent remarks about removing the cross from the Sejm and “many other public institutions” as it is “not a national symbol” have sparked wide debate amongst Poles.

According to reports by news site TVN24, Solidarity has come out publicly in defence of the holy symbol, stating that it would not agree to such terms.

“Trade Union Solidarity will never accept an attack on the cross, either in the Sejm, or in everyday Polish public life. The cross is a symbol of Polish culture and also our country’s membership into the world of Christianity and European culture,” it said in an official statement.
