Ziobro’s comments have fuelled speculation that the once-close allies’ relationship is irretrievably damaged
The future of main opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) looked in doubt this week after one its leading lights suggested it might be forced to break into two factions.
In an interview for the conservative newspaper Nasz Dziennik, Zbigniew Ziobro, one of the most powerful figures in the Law and Justice, hinted that drastic action might be needed in order to bring an end to a succession of election failures for the party.
“Either PiS becomes a party that will be capable of ruling on its own or it will be necessary to build two political groupings - a centrist one and a nationalist one - to woo both types of voters and then build a coalition,” said the PiS hardliner in the interview.
