There were calls this week for controversial MP Robert Biedron to be removed from his post as Vice Chairman of the Commission on Justice and Human Rights after he claims that he boasted about smoking marijuana.

According to news site TVN24, the Palikot Movement (RP) MP blurted out “I smoke! I smoke!” during a parliamentary debate on the topic of legalising soft drugs taking part in the Sejm.

Law and Justice (PiS) MP Robert Telus was speaking at the time of the interruption and fellow PiS MP Andrzej Jaworski has since called for his removal from his post. This has also been backed by a number of other politicians from various parties.

“It is totally unacceptable that a member of parliament, and somebody in his position, should be boasting about breaking the law,” stated Andrzej Biernat of Civic Platform (PO).

On Tuesday, Rzeczpospolita claimed that Mr Biedron was referring to burning incense. However, at a recent press conference, the MP stood by his outburst.

“I understand PiS would prefer all marijuana users to receive long-term prison sentences, but the issue is more serious. I made this declaration and I guarantee that the state will not understand the ordinary citizen,” he said.

“Even though I am a teetotaler, when it comes to marijuana, I publicly declared I smoke it because I think the law in Poland, in this instance, violates fundamental rights and civil liberties and needs addressing.”

He then went on to state his views on abortion.

“When the state asks me about abortion, I will tell it I’m 100 percent behind the right to have an abortion. This is another matter involving civil liberties.”
