Jose Maria Bakero needs his team to perform over their next two games
A 1-0 loss in poor style at home to Widzew Lodz last weekend has cast the Railwaymen of Lech Poznan into the pits of despair, and pushed Spanish manager Jose Maria Bakero once again to the brink of the exit door.
“It’s not exactly a storm, but the clouds look pretty solid,” admitted the club’s director of sport, Andrzej Dawidziuk. “It’s a matter of bringing the sun out again as quickly as possible,” he continued.
Lech hasn’t been in such dire straits since the club merged in 2006 with Amica Wronki, creating a Wielkopolska powerhouse. If Lech fail to win European qualification, the financial and sporting losses could lead to an exodus of the team’s best players.
For now, Bakero retains the support of club owner, Jacek Rutkowski, but the fans have already fallen out of love with the Spaniard, chanting, “Guantanamero, it’s time to f**k off Bakero!” during the last league match. Anything less than two wins against LKS and Zaglebie prior to Xmas, and they could get their wish.
