The proposed VAT increase would bring crisps into the 23 percent tax bracket
The government has announced that there may soon be a VAT increase on crisps and other similar snacks.
According to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, basic foodstuffs such as bread, meat, grain products and juices are taxed at 5 percent, with most other products slightly higher at 8 percent. However, the move would bring the snacks into the 23 percent VAT bracket - the figure for items which can have negative effects of health such as coffee, alcohol, chocolate, sweets and pastries.
