There were shocks around the country this week when a newborn baby was found abandoned in a basement.

According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the girl was discovered under a house in the western village of Boruja Koscielna, although the owner of the building was unable to explain how she had got there.

The child, born an estimated eight weeks premature, had been wrapped in a towel, placed in a bag and left in the freezing conditions.

She is currently on a respirator in a Poznan hospital and while in a serious condition, reports in Fakt stated on Thursday there had been signs of stabilization.

Police are now hunting for the baby’s mother.

“If anyone knows of a woman who was pregnant and no longer is, yet has no child, please contact us immediately” says police spokesman Andrzej Borowiak.
