Investigators looking into the case of the mystery Cieszyn boy, whose remains were found by a lake back in March 2010 [see NPE 12/63], have received expert information regarding his DNA. It is hoped that at some point the information may help in his identification and solving the mystery of his death.

The expert analysis was carried out by scientists at the University of Warsaw. The tests are so detailed that if at any time in the future the DNA of a close relative is entered into police databases, it will be possible to link them beyond all doubt.

Investigators also received more information about how the boy’s injuries were caused. “There still hasn’t been a major breakthrough in the investigation. We’re waiting for tests on the chromosomes. We’re still interviewing people who paid by credit card for clothing identical to the boy’s. We still check out any information that comes in regarding him. So far, it hasn’t brought us any closer to solving the case,” said a press officer.

Furnace baby mum charged

Police this week arrested a 35-year-old woman who disposed of her new-born baby in a domestic furnace. Social workers from Gorzyce near Wodzislaw called in the police after they noticed that the woman had been heavily pregnant, had then clearly given birth, but they could find no sign of a baby in her home.

“She claimed she gave birth alone at home on January 29th, cut the umbilical cord, then went to wash herself. She says that when she returned, the child was already dead, so she took it to the boiler room and threw it into the furnace,” an informer told reporters from Gazeta Katowice.

Police technicians found traces of umbilical blood in the house and also collected ashes from the base of the furnace from which they will attempt to rescue a DNA sample. However, it will be impossible to establish whether or not the baby was dead, or how it had died.

The woman already has three children aged 6, 10 and 12. Her husband has been working in Holland for several years and only occasionally returns to the family home. Police have established that while still pregnant, the woman had threatened that she had no intention of raising a fourth child.
