Szczecin Grinds to a Halt in Blackout

Szczecin, Poland’s seventh-largest city and one of its main seaports, came to a standstill on Monday night when sleet and ice pulled down electrical lines and plunged it and its vicinity into darkness. Hospitals operated on emergency generators, but most residents took involuntary holidays from work. The local power distributor managed to bring successive areas back on line starting in the mid-afternoon on Tuesday, and central heating was restarted before nightfall.
