The inclusion of Ireneusz Jelen (middle) has surprised many fans

Ireneusz Jelen was the major surprise package in Smuda’s squad for the upcoming Portugal match. Hitherto, Smuda has been firm on only picking players who are in form and playing regularly for their clubs. Jelen seems to be somethng of a major exception to the rule.

“Irek is an experienced player. He’s fast, he can score goals. He’s the kind of player you can’t forget about. I wanted to see him during training before the Portugal match, to assess what condition he’s in,” explained Smuda in an interview with Przeglad Sportowy.

“He’s got four months before the tournament. I’m sure he’ll do everything to make sure he is in the squad,” continued Smuda.
