“The creepiest monument ever”

A mock-up of the plane that crashed in Smolensk was unveiled this week in the Sanctuary at Kalkow-Godow. The 10m long model is painted in the colours of the presidential plane and features various figures that died in the tragedy painted in the windows along the fuselage. Former President Lech Kaczynski and his wife appear in the doorway of the plane.

News of the model spread rapidly, with Britain’s Daily Mail reporting it as “The creepiest monument ever” and labelling it kitsch and tasteless. One reader commented, “It’s like making a memorial to Princess Diana in the shape of a Mercedes.”
