On Friday the news broke that Irish voters have rejected the Lisbon Treaty. Not going into the reasons why they did or whether in the final breakdown the accord would have been good for Europe or not, there is no doubt that this vote is a victory for democracy. European bureaucrats and national politicos have long taken for granted that the “dark masses” will swallow anything that’s thrown at them, as long as it is billed as “good for European integration”.
