Poland looks set to play an important role in the geopolitical chess game following Russia’s invasion of Georgia, taking the lead in a group of the EU’s Eastern European members pressing for a hard line against Moscow.

President Lech Kaczyński was one of the first heads of state to head for the former Russian republic, along with the Baltic States’ leaders, after the Russians surged towards Tblisi last week.
