Olympics Firmly in Shot

Poland’s medal haul in Beijing had risen to eight by Thursday of this week, placing it 15th overall in a week where the Olympics have vied successfully to turn the nation’s attention away from political tensions with Russia.

The total includes three golds – for men’s rowing, the shot putt and men’s vault – although hopes of more were dented by the exit of the men's volleyball and handball teams on Wednesday. Hopes for more high-profile successes now centre on remaining track and field athletes and the “Golden Girls” women's volleyball team.
