Former Polish sports minister Tomasz Lipiec began trial this week on charges of corruption and fraud between 2004 and 2007. The 38 year old former athlete has been accused of accepting at least PLN 270,000 in bribes, which included paying thousands out to a fictitious ‘babysitter’ and ‘driver’.
Despite pleading not guilty and denying all charges leveled at him, he faces a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.
Outside court, he refused to comment to reporters and the trial is closed to the media.
