Solidarity hero, Lech Walesa, says he will leave Poland if accusations persist
Prime Minister Donald Tusk issued a sharp warning this week to the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), the state organisation charged with investigating communist-era crimes: remain politically neutral or face closure. “The Institute will survive only if it maintains political and ideological neutrality. If it continues to display one-sided views publicly, it will be forced to close,” Tusk said. The blunt ultimatum comes following the IPN’s publication of a second book accusing former Solidarity hero, Lech Walesa, of being a communist agent.
