The European Commission has backtracked over a film it made to celebrate the fall of communism following complaints from Poland that it glossed over the country’s role in the downfall of the communist bloc.


Brussels, which had commissioned the film to commemorate the return of democracy to Central Europe 20 years ago, had to change it after furious Poles pointed out that while most countries which shrugged off one-party rule got ample coverage, Poland got a mere six seconds, and Solidarity was ignored completely.

To add to frustration in Poland, some of the Polish footage came from 1993.
