Poland took time to bask in historical pride on June 4 when the country celebrated the 20th-anniversary of the historic first free elections in the communist bloc.

Coming after the famed Round Table negotiations between Poland’s then communist government and the Lech Walesa led opposition, the June 4 elections heralded the end of 40 years of communist rule, and helped trigger a wave of revolutions in Central Europe that shattered the Iron Curtain.

Speaking at a formal event in Krakow to commemorate the elections that brought together former dissidents and heads of state, the Solidarity icon Lech Walesa said that Poland had every right to enjoy its moment.
