Mixed news for shipyards

Production at the recently sold shipyards of Gdynia and Szczecin has ground to a halt after the new owners, United International Trust dismissed over 4,500 workers this week.

The blow may be softened, however, after the European Commission indicated it may put together a separate rescue package to save the Gdansk shipyard sold in 2007 in order to bolster support for the current Platform government before the forthcoming European Parliament elections.

The government was forced to put the yards of Szczecińska Nowa in Szczecin and Gdynia into liquidation after a legal battle with the European Commission regarding illegal government aid. The conservative opposition are claiming the governmen ...
