Fuel stations are closing throughout Poland due to economic conditions, with as many as 200 locking up their pumps in Q1 of 2009.

Experts interviewed by Gazeta Prawna estimated that 800 more could close over the next decade. There are presently 6,753 stations operating in Poland.

The global crisis is making Poland a more attractive site for setting up a business. Recent Eurostat data shows labour costs in Poland are increasing slower than in other countries in the region. For Q1 of 2009, the cost of labour was 5.5 per cent higher year to year, while in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary costs rose between 6.6 per cent and 8 per cent.
