Flash floods struck many parts of Poland this week causing widespread damage but, as yet, no loss of life. In Bialystok an average of 30 litres of water per square metre fell, but in some areas it was twice that. Due to the absence of high winds the damage was caused by the water alone, with mostly cellars being flooded.
The situation was worse in the south of the country, particularly in Opole where fire officers intervened 170 times in a 24 hour period. Ulica Proszkowa in Opole was closed to traffic due to the high water level under the bridge, while subways leading to the station and cellars in the Regional Hospital were flooded.
