One of the men accused of ‘instigating and directing’ the murder of Solidarity priest Father Jerzy Popieluszko has died at the age of 82. General Zenon Platek, a former secret policeman who was head of Department IV of the communist-era security service (SB), which was responsible for spying against the Church, died last week after a long illness. In 1990 he was arrested along with another SB officer for murdering Popieluszko, who had been kidnapped, tortured and then killed, his body later being dumped in a river.
