Brava – a tiny Cape Verdean island off the coast of West Africa. Famous for the sheer difficulty of getting there, as all the guidebooks warned us. An odd place even in a country as odd as Cape Verde.
After a full day of crawling over cemetery walls, poking at old graves and perplexing the local grave diggers, we looked like we ourselves had spent some time six feet under. We went to Brava to investigate its rich history and cultural heritage, and this task left us filthy and exhausted. And thirsty. There was sand in our hair, sand in our teeth, and sand in our underwear. The wind kept ringing in our ears. And I had to pee very urgently.
